why Recode-me exists

A structured psychological approach to understanding and changing addiction and behavioural patterns.

For more than two decades Donna Stambulich has worked with individuals and families affected by addiction and destructive behavioural patterns.

During that time, one thing became increasingly clear: addiction rarely exists in isolation. It affects relationships, families and entire systems of support.

Partners, parents and children often carry years of uncertainty, fear and emotional exhaustion while trying to help someone they love.

These experiences shaped Donna’s determination to understand addiction not simply as a behaviour to stop, but as a pattern to understand and change.

The Reality of Addiction

Addiction is one of the most misunderstood human experiences of our time.

It is often framed as weakness, poor choices or a lack of willpower.

Yet anyone who has lived close to addiction knows the reality is far more complex.

Substances and destructive behaviours often begin as attempts to cope with distress, trauma, overwhelm or emotional pain. Over time the brain learns that these behaviours provide relief, creating powerful patterns that can feel almost impossible to break.

Understanding these patterns is the first step toward changing them.

Lived Understanding

Some aspects of addiction can be studied in textbooks.

Others can only be understood through lived experience.

Over many years of clinical work — and through personal exposure to the realities of addiction and recovery — Donna developed a deep appreciation for the courage it takes for individuals and families to confront these patterns.

Within recovery communities there is a well-known truth:

there is something uniquely powerful about people who truly understand the struggle helping others find a way forward.

Donna’s work reflects that same principle — combining professional knowledge with genuine understanding.

Why The Recode-Me Framework Was Created

Over years of working with people trying to change destructive behavioural patterns, Donna began noticing something important.

Many people were not failing recovery because they lacked motivation or willpower.

They were missing key stages in the process of change.

Real change involves more than simply stopping a behaviour.

It requires recognising patterns, stabilising emotional responses, rewiring behavioural habits, rebuilding identity and embedding healthier ways of living.

From these observations the Recode-Me framework gradually evolved.

The Recode-Me Framework

The framework guides individuals through five phases of change:

RECOGNISE
Understanding the patterns driving behaviour.

REGULATE
Stabilising the nervous system so change becomes possible.

REWIRE
Replacing destructive behavioural responses with healthier ones.

REGAIN
Rebuilding identity, agency and relationships.

RECODE
Embedding a healthier way of living.

Recode-Me is built on a simple belief: when people understand their patterns, they can change their future.Recovery is not only about stopping harmful behaviour. It is about creating a life that is stable, meaningful and worth waking up to. You never have to use again. That's freedom.
